Vance to Join Wife in Greenland Visit, Tensions Rise
United States Vice President J.D. VanceETY-- has announced that he will accompany his wife, Usha Vance, on a visit to GreenlandGTEC--. This decision follows the previous announcement that Usha Vance would lead an American delegation to the island, a move that has drawn strong opposition from Greenlandic and Danish officials.
Vance made the announcement on the social media platform X, stating that he was excited about his wife's visit and decided to join her. He mentioned that he plans to visit the Thule Air Base, home to the U.S. Space Force's 821st Space Wing, and interact with the personnel known as the "Guardians."
Vance's visit is aimed at assessing Greenland's security situation. He highlighted that Greenland, largely covered in ice with a population of 57,000, is a significant target for adversaries of the United States and Canada. He criticized Denmark for not taking Greenland's security seriously enough, stating that the U.S. aims to revitalize the security of Greenland's people, which is crucial for global security.
The inclusion of high-ranking officials such as the White House National Security Advisor and the Secretary of Energy in the delegation has heightened tensions. Danish and Greenlandic officials have viewed the visit as provocative, especially in light of Trump's previous attempts to acquire Greenland from Denmark.
Greenland, a semi-autonomous region, is responsible for its own domestic affairs while Denmark handles its foreign policy and defense. Local politicians and the Danish government have strongly opposed any U.S. takeover, emphasizing their willingness to strengthen commercial ties with the U.S. but not to be governed by it.
Greenland's Prime Minister, Múte Egede, described the planned visit as "extremely aggressive," especially given its proximity to local elections. He questioned the purpose of the National Security Advisor's presence, suggesting it was a display of power.
Jens-Frederik Nielsen, a prominent figure in the Democratic Party, echoed similar sentiments, stating that Usha Vance's visit showed a lack of respect for the Greenlandic people. Nielsen is a potential candidate for the next Prime Minister of Greenland.
