UPS Eyes Future with Humanoid Robots Amid Partnership Talks with Figure AI
Global logistics giant ups is reportedly in discussions with robotics startup Figure AI to explore the deployment of humanoid robots within its logistics network. Sources familiar with the matter have indicated that the two companies have been in dialogue since last year, with negotiations persisting in recent months.
As of now, the specific roles that Figure's humanoid robots will undertake within UPS remain unclear. In February, Figure hinted at a partnership with a logistics company, sharing a 90-second video on social media platform X. In the footage, a robot, standing 5 feet 6 inches tall, is seen sorting small parcels beside a conveyor belt.
The rise of AI technology has spurred numerous startups and major tech firms to develop robots whose form and movement closely resemble those of humans. Figure AI has emerged as one of the prominent players in this sector. Earlier this year, the startup was reportedly negotiating with investors to raise $1.5 billion at a valuation of $39.5 billion. However, questions have been raised recently regarding the depth of Figure's collaboration with the BMW Group.
In a statement, UPS emphasized that it does not comment on "specific or potential supplier partnerships," but noted that it's committed to regularly exploring and integrating a wide range of technologies, including robotics. Figure chose not to comment on the ongoing discussions.
UPS has significantly increased its investment in automation in recent years. The company has deployed fixed robotic arms and AI-driven software in its advanced Velocity facilities. Furthermore, UPS has collaborated with startup Dexterity Inc., which specializes in developing industrial robots with human-like precision and manipulation capabilities.
