Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has criticized activist Syeda Hameed for her recent comments suggesting that Bangladeshis have a right to live in India. Rijiju accused Hameed of misleading people in the name of humanity and urged her not to support illegal migrants. The BJP has raised concerns over the increasing population of illegal immigrants, primarily from Bangladesh, in northeastern states. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has proposed a demographic mission to tackle the issue [1].

In a social media post, Rijiju shared a video of Hameed where she claimed, "What is wrong in being Bangladeshi? Bangladeshis are humans too, and the world is so big, they can live here (India), they are not depriving anyone of their rights... Saying that they are depriving someone of their rights is troublesome, extremely mischievous, and detrimental to humanity." Rijiju responded by stating, "Misleading in the name of humanity. It's about our land and identity. Why the minority Buddhists, Christians, Hindus & Sikhs in Bangladesh and Pakistan are persecuted & tortured? Sayeda Hameed may be closest to Sonia Gandhi & Rahul Gandhi but shouldn't support illegal migrants."

The BJP has consistently raised concerns over the rising population of illegal immigrants in the northeastern states. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has proposed a demographic mission to address this issue, stating that the increasing population of illegal immigrants is a matter of concern and a threat to national security. He announced the launch of a 'High-Power Demography Mission' during his Independence Day speech, citing concerns over demographic changes in border areas [2].

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has also taken a firm stance against Bangladeshi infiltrators, emphasizing that his government will not tolerate any attempts to alter the state's demography. Sarma accused a team of Congress-linked intellectuals and activists of trying to paint lawful evictions as a "humanitarian crisis" and weaken the fight against illegal immigrants [3].

The comments have reignited political tensions, with BJP leaders accusing Congress-linked intellectuals and activists of justifying illegal immigration in the name of secularism and humanity. The BJP has also criticized Rahul Gandhi for allegedly collaborating with anti-India elements, including George Soros, and weakening the nation [2].
