UniCredit SpA has further expanded its equity stake in Commerzbank AG, increasing its holding to approximately 26%, according to a statement released on Monday. This move solidifies UniCredit's position as the German rival's largest investor. The Italian lender has also begun converting its synthetic position into physical shares, which will elevate its voting rights to around 29% "in due course" [1].
UniCredit's CEO, Andrea Orcel, has been gradually increasing the bank's stake in Commerzbank since the initial holding was disclosed last year. This expansion does not change UniCredit's stance but strengthens its position as a major shareholder [1].
In a separate statement, Commerzbank AG acknowledged the increased stake but noted that it does not alter the fundamental situation. The bank's shares rose by as much as 1.0% in Frankfurt on Monday, while UniCredit's stock increased by as much as 0.2% [1].
