Ukrainian official: Russia launches largest attack on Kharkiv since the beginning of the war
Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, has once again been the target of a significant Russian attack. According to regional governor Oleh Syniehubov, the assault involved drones, missiles, and KAB guided bombs, resulting in at least three fatalities and 19 injuries [1]. This marks one of the most intense attacks on the city since the war began.
The attack occurred overnight on June 7 and targeted various civilian facilities, including a 9-story residential building, a local enterprise, and other facilities. Emergency services are currently on-scene, searching for additional victims trapped under the rubble. Among the injured, two children were affected, including a 1-month-old baby [1].
The mayor of Kharkiv, Ihor Terekhov, reported that the Osnovyanskyi and Kyiv districts suffered significant strikes. He noted that the attack involved 48 Shahed drones, two missiles, and four guided aerial bombs [2]. The full extent of the damage is still not clear, and the status of the injured victims is unknown.
This escalation comes amidst failed peace negotiations in Istanbul and follows Ukraine's proposal for a truce, which Russia rejected. The attack is seen as a response to a Ukrainian drone strike on Russian military jets, which destroyed several nuclear-capable planes [3].
The Ukrainian military has been proactive, launching a preemptive strike on Russian airfields in Saratov and Ryazan regions overnight. This strike is part of Ukraine's broader strategy to counter Russian aggression [3].
The economic implications of this escalation remain to be seen, but the ongoing conflict is likely to continue impacting global markets and financial stability. As the war progresses, investors should closely monitor developments for potential disruptions to trade and supply chains.
