UK Court Rejects Bitcoin Millionaire's Landfill Search Appeal
In a dramatic turn of events, the UK Court of Appeals has rejected a request by James Howells to search a landfill for a hard drive containing private keys to 8,000 Bitcoin, valued at approximately $660 million. Howells, known for his relentless pursuit to recover his lost fortune, expressed his frustration through a post on the social media platform X. Despite his efforts, the Royal Court of the UK has maintained a firm stance on the matter.
On March 14, Howells announced that his appeal to excavate the Newport landfill was denied. The official document, which he shared on X, stated that the judge found 'no real prospect of success' and saw no compelling reason to proceed further with the case. Howells, in response, posted a series of tweets criticizing the decision and hinting at his next steps.
Howells had mined 8,000 Bitcoin tokens in the early 2010s and stored the credentials on a hard drive, which he accidentally discarded in 2013. Since then, he has been seeking permission to search the Newport landfill in hopes of retrieving the hard drive. The value of his lost holdings, given the current Bitcoin price, stands at $660 million.
Howells has indicated that he will now take his case to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), alleging that the UK Royal Court has denied him the Right to Property and the Right to a Fair Trial. Earlier this year, his $495 million lawsuit against the Newport City Council was dismissed. Additionally, Howells claimed to have secured funding to purchase the Newport landfill, aiming to recover his lost fortune.
If Howells successfully retrieves the hard drive, it would undoubtedly be one of the most remarkable stories in the cryptocurrency world. The case highlights the complexities and challenges associated with recovering lost digital assets, as well as the legal and regulatory hurdles that individuals face in such situations. The outcome of Howells' appeal to the ECHR will be closely watched by the cryptocurrency community and legal experts alike.
