Uber will launch an artificial intelligence assistant based on OpenAI technology to help drivers switch to electric vehicles as part of its efforts to reduce emissions, the ride-hailing company said on Tuesday. The chatbot, which is based on OpenAI's GPT-4, was unveiled at Uber's Go-Get Zero event in London. It will launch in the US next year and then expand to other regions.

Uber said it will provide personalized answers based on the city where the driver is located and offer eligible rewards. The company will also expand the use of the chatbot to answer questions about electric vehicles in early 2025.

Uber also launched a mentorship program to connect experienced electric vehicle drivers with those looking to switch. About 180,000 Uber drivers in North America and Europe switch to electric vehicles each month.

Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber's chief executive, said: "Uber drivers are adopting electric vehicles five times faster than the average driver in the US, Canada and Europe. In London, nearly 30 per cent of Uber miles are electric."

The company also offered top-rated merchants on its food delivery platform $50,000 to fund their own sustainability plans and attract more customers. Uber also launched a series of pop-ups for customers to test electric vehicles. London users can test the Lotus Eletre, while customers in Los Angeles, Miami and Dallas can book the Rivian R1.
