saw a notable stock increase of 5.87%, reflecting growing investor confidence driven by recent strategic initiatives in autonomous driving. In a significant partnership with Volkswagen Group, Uber is set to deploy thousands of electric ID Buzz vans in the U.S., marking a key move towards expanding its autonomous service options. This collaboration will commence tests later this year, targeting commercial operations in Los Angeles by next year. Initially, vehicles will feature human safety drivers, with the rollout contingent on obtaining necessary regulatory approvals. The partnership aims to eventually cover other major U.S. markets over the next decade.Autonomous vehicles have become a focal point for Uber, which, after halting its independent development efforts, has chosen to collaborate with automotive manufacturers and fleet operators. One of Uber's most significant collaborations is with Waymo, already providing autonomous services in Phoenix and soon expanding to Atlanta. Uber has signed agreements with over ten global partners to integrate autonomous technology across its ride-hailing, delivery, and freight businesses. This strategic alignment comes amid broader market expansion, as Tesla prepares to introduce its human-supervised robot taxis in Austin, and Waymo rapidly scales its fleet in major cities.
Volkswagen has been conducting tests of ID Buzz vans equipped with human operators in Austin. These vehicles are integrated with autonomous software developed by Mobileye Global Inc., a subsidiary of Intel. For deployment on the Uber platform, Volkswagen will implement systems developed under its MOIA brand. Additionally, Uber plans to collaborate with Avride for a Dallas launch of autonomous services based on the Hyundai Ioniq 5 model this year.
Internationally, Uber is also working with China's WeRide to establish autonomous services in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. This expansive effort reflects an increased focus on leveraging partnerships and technology to advance its autonomous service capabilities, while concurrently reacting to similar initiatives by competitors such as Lyft, which is preparing its own autonomous service rollouts supported by Toyota-backed startup May Mobility in Atlanta.
