Chinese automaker BYD and international mobile mobility and delivery technology company Uber announced a multi-year strategic partnership to deploy 100,000 new BYD electric vehicles in key global markets to further expand the electric vehicle lineup on the Uber platform.
BYD and Uber said that their cooperation will start first in Europe and Latin America and gradually expand to regions such as the Middle East, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, providing Uber drivers with reasonably priced BYD electric vehicles.
After the cooperation, BYD and Uber will also provide drivers with vehicle maintenance, charging, financing, and leasing discounts according to market conditions to support the transition to electric vehicles. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said, When an Uber driver makes the switch to an EV, they can deliver up to four times the emissions benefits compared to a regular motorist, simply because they are on the road more.
BYD President Chuanfu Wang said, Uber and BYD share a commitment to innovate towards a cleaner, greener world, and I am excited to work together towards that future.
In addition, BYD and Uber also stated that they will work together to cooperate in the development of autonomous driving vehicles and deploy them to Uber's ride-hailing platform in the future. Uber said that as the world's largest on-demand mobility and delivery platform, it is fully capable of pushing autonomous driving vehicle technology to the global market on a large scale.
In the past two years, the high price of electric vehicles and rising borrowing costs have been hindering the popularization of electric vehicles, leading to slower than expected growth in demand for electric vehicles. However, the intensifying issue of climate change and the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions have still provided support for the electrification process of the global transportation sector.
It is worth noting that Uber is not only cooperating with BYD but also reached a cooperation with Tesla in January this year to advocate for American drivers to use electric vehicles, aiming to achieve zero emissions in cities in the United States and Canada by 2030.
