Elon Musk's social media platform, X, once again faced technical disruptions on Thursday morning, affecting user access to both its website and mobile app. The platform, known for its vast user base and real-time information flow, experienced a slew of accessibility issues, reported by thousands globally. By 11:03 a.m. ET, approximately 18,600 users had submitted complaints via Downdetector, a service that collects reports from users encountering issues.
Users attempting to access their timelines were met with an error message stating, "Something went wrong. Try reloading." Throughout this period, X's Developer Platform status page remained devoid of any incident reports for the day of August 14. The platform's issues appear to have been largely mitigated within roughly 30 minutes, as reports on Downdetector dropped to below 600 by 11:21 a.m. ET.
X, which became an integral part of Musk’s xAI artificial intelligence company earlier this year, has experienced multiple outages in 2025. On March 10, Musk attributed similar service disruptions to a “massive cyberattack” which allegedly involved significant organizational backing. This was followed by a less severe, but still notable service interruption in late May, limiting user access to timelines and posts.
The latest incident raised concerns yet again over the platform's reliability, as users globally reported encountering service disruptions. Data suggested that a significant 53% of these issues were related to the mobile app, with 45% linked to its web application, and a mere 1% concerning server connection problems.
As per the pattern seen in previous outages, reports of issues surged shortly after 10:40 a.m. EDT, with problems fully cascading by 11:08 a.m., as recorded on Downdetector. By later that morning, the frequency of these reports began to decrease significantly, indicating a swift resolution from the platform’s technical teams.
Musk has previously underscored the necessity for “major operational improvements” within X, particularly following outages earlier in the year that resulted in substantial user impact. The recovery from the current outage seems swift, but it highlights ongoing infrastructure challenges for the platform amidst its ambitious growth and integration within xAI’s broader technological ecosystem.
Despite the operational challenges, X has remained an essential conduit for global communication and information exchange. Its repeated outages have prompted active discussions among users, albeit on rival social media platforms when X itself is inaccessible.
Musk's management has faced scrutiny for these outages, with critics questioning the strategic moves and structural changes made since his acquisition of the then-named Twitter. As the platform continues to evolve under Musk’s stewardship, maintaining operational stability remains a critical challenge for X, balancing innovation with reliability in a highly competitive social media landscape.
