Turkey's President Erdogan: Condemns Saturday's attacks to Iran's sovereignty
Turkey’s President Erdogan Condemns Attacks on Iran’s Sovereignty Amid Regional Tensions
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has reiterated Turkey’s firm opposition to attacks on Iran’s sovereignty, emphasizing the risks of military escalation in the region. Speaking aboard his plane following a visit to Ethiopia, Erdogan stated, “A new war targeting Iran will not benefit anyone; on the contrary, our region will lose” according to his remarks. His remarks followed U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in June 2025, which Ankara condemned as a threat to regional stability as reported by Hurriyet.
Erdogan highlighted Turkey’s role as a mediator in U.S.-Iran nuclear negotiations, which resumed in February 2026 after being suspended due to prior conflicts. He noted that Turkey, alongside Gulf states, Egypt, and Pakistan, has worked to facilitate dialogue between Tehran and Washington. “We oppose military intervention against Iran,” he said, warning that escalation could deepen uncertainty and destabilize trade and investment flows according to his statement.
The U.S. has increased its military presence in the region, raising concerns about renewed conflict. Erdogan stressed that Turkey remains in high-level contact with both Iran and the U.S. to de-escalate tensions. Recent diplomatic efforts include separate calls with Iranian and U.S. leaders, where he advocated for peaceful resolutions as he emphasized.
Financial markets remain sensitive to geopolitical risks, with investors monitoring the potential impact of prolonged tensions on energy prices and regional trade. Turkey’s stance aligns with its broader strategy to position itself as a diplomatic bridge, aiming to mitigate disruptions to global supply chains and economic cooperation in the Middle East according to analysis.
Erdogan reiterated that Turkey prioritizes “building bridges, not walls,” underscoring its commitment to preserving diplomatic channels. “As long as the door to diplomacy remains open, there is hope,” he said, signaling continued efforts to prevent conflict while safeguarding regional economic interests as stated in his remarks.
