Turkey launches antitrust probes against retailers, BIM says
In a move to further strengthen its antitrust regulations, Turkey's Competition Authority (TCA) has launched a new investigation into retail giants, including BIM, following the completion of a preliminary report on the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector inquiry [1]. This investigation comes amidst growing concerns over market competition and potential price manipulation within the sector.According to Sabah newspaper, the TCA initiated the second investigation after obtaining new data during the first probe [1]. The report suggests that the size of this new investigation is not smaller than the previous one, and it is expected to be completed on April 26 [1]. The ruling on this matter may be delivered by October [1].
The FMCG sector, which plays a crucial role in Turkey's economy, has been subject to extensive political and economic discussions due to its significant impact on consumer prices [2]. The TCA's decision to conduct a new sector inquiry was justified by the drastic changes in the structure and competitive landscape of the FMCG retail market since the 2012 report [2].
Turkey's antitrust authority has been actively monitoring the FMCG sector for potential violations. In 2017, the TCA reviewed the acquisition of Tesco by Migros, which led to the realization that a new sector inquiry was necessary [2].
The ongoing investigations into BIM and other retailers come as Turkish consumers grapple with rising inflation rates, which have led to concerns over price manipulation and market competition [3]. The TCA's efforts to ensure fair competition within the FMCG sector are crucial in maintaining consumer trust and stabilizing the Turkish economy.
