Reports suggest that TSMC has commenced trial production of its 2nm chips earlier than anticipated, potentially impacting the tech landscape with its integration in the forthcoming iPhone 17 series. The industry is closely watching as TSMC aims to stabilize yield rates before full-scale production.
Sources reveal that by December last year, TSMC had already presented its N2 prototype to major clients such as Apple and NVIDIA. The Taiwanese chipmaker began installing manufacturing equipment at its Baoshan facility and initiated trial production earlier this third quarter, ahead of market expectations set for the fourth quarter.
The industry's buzz is that Apple may have already reserved the full capacity of TSMC’s initial 2nm production, following a similar strategy from the 3nm chips used in the iPhone 15 Pro. Speculation continues over whether Apple will exclusively designate these advanced chips for its Pro model lineup, namely the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max.
The 2nm technology is set to significantly enhance performance and efficiency, providing flagship smartphones with up to a 25% reduction in energy consumption and a 15% increase in chip density. Meeting these expectations could solidify TSMC's position as a leader in semiconductor innovation.
TSMC plans to scale up production in the first half of 2025, aligning with Apple's product release cycle. Meanwhile, Samsung, its long-time rival, is also poised to enter the 2nm chip market by 2025, suggesting an impending competition in securing major contracts beyond its in-house needs.
