Chatbot use is growing, but Google search remains the dominant way to find news and information. For every ChatGPT news link click, there are 379 Google search clicks, and Google has about 373 times the comparable usage of ChatGPT. Despite growth in chatbot usage, Google still remains the front door to find online news, information, and products.

Chatbot usage is rapidly increasing, yet Google search remains the dominant platform for finding news and information. According to a recent analysis, for every click on a news link from ChatGPT, there are 379 clicks from Google search. Furthermore, Google has about 373 times the comparable usage of ChatGPT [1].

Despite the growth in chatbot usage, Google continues to be the primary gateway to online news, information, and products. A study by Similarweb revealed that Americans visited news websites 9.5 billion times from using web search engines like Google, compared to 25 million times from ChatGPT between January and May 2025 [1].

Google has also rolled out AI Mode in its search experience across India, enhancing the traditional search process with detailed, AI-generated responses. This feature, which does not require sign-ups, aims to provide comprehensive answers to a wide range of queries [2].

While chatbots like ChatGPT offer innovative ways to access information, their usage is still significantly lower than that of Google search. This is evident in the data, which shows that chatbots account for less than 1% of website visits compared to the 11% for search engines [1].

The shift in user behavior towards AI-powered search tools is a notable trend, but it does not yet indicate a substantial threat to Google’s dominance. As users continue to rely heavily on Google for their search needs, the company remains well-positioned to maintain its market leadership.
