Trump Vowed to Take Control of Greenland:"We Will Make You Rich"
President Donald Trump reiterated his interest in acquiring greenland during his address to Congress on Tuesday. Expressing a commitment to the incredible people of Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, Trump painted a future of prosperity and safety under U.S. governance.
We will keep you safe, we will make you rich, and together, we will take Greenland to heights like you have never thought possible before, Trump declared.
The president described Greenland as having a small population on a very large and strategically important piece of land. He emphasized its significance for both national and international security, particularly for the U.S. ballistic missile warning system due to its location along the shortest route from Europe to North America.
We need Greenland for national security and even international security, he said. We're working with everybody involved to try and get it. One way or the other, we're going to get it.
While Trump extended warm wishes to Greenlanders, he also made clear the U.S. intention to acquire the territory, sending mixed signals between supportive and slightly menacing tones. This unexpected but not unprecedented assertion comes amid long-standing interests from Trump in Greenland's strategic importance, aimed at countering Russian and Chinese power in the Arctic.
Opinion polls suggest that most Greenlanders oppose joining the U.S., although there is significant support for eventual independence from Denmark. Trump's interest has invigorated Greenland's independence movement, prompting calls for discussions with Denmark about secession.
Greenland's ruling Inuit Ataqatigiit party cautioned against rushing an independence vote after the March general election, citing potential economic and welfare implications. Denmark's U.N. Ambassador Christina Markus Lassen reaffirmed Greenlanders' right to self-determination, supporting the strengthening of security in the Arctic with NATO and the U.S.
Trump remains steadfast, pushing for what he describes as a crucial acquisition: This is a deal that must happen. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN! he concluded.
