Trump: Would take sanctions off Iran if they can be peaceful - Fox
US President Donald Trump has indicated that he could lift sanctions on Iran if the country demonstrates peaceful behavior and cooperation with Washington. This announcement comes amidst ongoing tensions between the two nations and follows recent military actions.During a Fox News interview aired on Sunday, Trump stated, "If they can be peaceful, and if they can join us, they are not going to do any more harm, I would take the sanctions off" [1]. He further emphasized that sanctions relief would make a significant difference for Tehran.
Trump's remarks were made in response to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's statement vowing to attack US bases if Washington renewed strikes against Iranian targets. The president halted sanctions relief work after this statement, citing the material's weight and logistical challenges in removing enriched uranium before US strikes [1].
In another development, Trump stated that he would "absolutely" consider bombing Iran again if Tehran resumes uranium enrichment to weapons-grade levels. This was in response to Khamenei's statement, which Trump characterized as filled with "anger, hatred, and disgust" [2]. Trump also claimed that Iran's nuclear facilities had been "obliterated" and that the country was now "exhausted" from recent Israeli and American strikes [2].
Despite Trump's statements, it remains uncertain whether the administration was taking any steps to ease legal curbs on Iran. The president appeared to hint at potential relief, suggesting that China could continue to buy Iranian oil, but White House officials later indicated that this did not mean an easing of US restrictions [3].
The ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel has resulted in significant casualties and damage. According to the Iranian Health Ministry, the conflict left 627 civilians dead and over 5,300 injured. Iran’s military reported 56 soldiers killed, while Israeli authorities reported 28 Israeli deaths and over 1,200 injuries from Iranian retaliatory attacks [2].
The ceasefire between Iran and Israel, announced on June 24, was described by Trump as a time to end hostilities. "They were both beaten up. It was a great time to end it," he said [2]. However, Iran denied any plans to restart nuclear negotiations with the US.
