Trump Meme Coin's Weekend Surge Leaves MoonPay in Liquidity Crisis
MoonPay, a cryptocurrency trading platform, faced a liquidity crisis over the weekend with the launch of a Trump-themed meme coin. The coin, which had a reserve capital to handle sudden market fluctuations, found itself unable to manage the high demand, leading to a series of liquidations.
MoonPay's CEO, in a recent podcast appearance, revealed that the platform aimed to rival Pump.fun since its inception. Despite dwindling supplies and inaccessible reserves, the trading platform Moonshot successfully attracted the Trump token, helping MoonPay avert the crisis.
The Saturday launch of the Trump coin backfired as the developers did not anticipate that reserve supplies might not be accessible on the weekend. However, Galaxy and Ripple responded to MoonPay's CEO and quickly amassed $100 million to tackle the liquidation of the platform.
The deal was a win-win for both parties. MoonPay retained its investors, while the CEO liquidated BTC holdings as a mortgage against the loan. However, the platform witnessed high demand on Sunday and Monday, leading to a second challenge. The team hoped that the reserve would unlock on Monday, but it did not happen, and they had to turn to Ripple's Brad Garlinghouse again for another $60 million.
Crypto trading is a real-time affair that takes place 24 hours a day, unlike traditional stocks and equities. This is the reason why the demand surfaced during the weekend and why MoonPay could manage its crisis by gathering $160 million on a lien in such a short time.
The Trump coin garnered a market cap of $40 billion at the start, but within one day, the value increased by $35 billion. However, the token could not retain the same volume on Monday, and around 70% of the market cap value has been lost. Traders must feel excited, irrespective of how the crisis was managed, and we will keep an eye out for the next two days to see if the coin revives or loses further.
