BlackRock CEO Larry Fink made a direct call to President Trump to pitch a deal involving the acquisition of ports on either side of the Panama Canal. Fink's proposal was to shift the control of these ports into American hands, potentially securing the biggest infrastructure deal in BlackRock's history. This move aligns with Trump's "America First" vision and his desire to reduce Chinese influence in the region.

Fink's pitch came at a time when Trump was expressing his desire to "recover" the Panama Canal for the United States. He had previously claimed, without evidence, that China was managing the canal. Fink capitalized on this desire to secure the deal, which would also give Trump a victory in his efforts to show strength in international trade and conflicts.

The deal, worth $19 billion, reflects an extraordinary convergence of Trump's "America First" vision and Wall Street's global profit-seeking. blackrock, with $11.6 trillion under management, will acquire the two ports in Panama and more than 40 others around the world from CK Hutchison Holdings Ltd., a Hong Kong-based conglomerate. The acquisition is part of BlackRock's strategy to close large deals in distant private markets and compete with the world's largest alternative asset managers.

Trump praised the deal in a speech, saying that a "great American company" had announced the purchase of both ports of the Panama Canal and many other related assets. He did not mention BlackRock by name, but emphasized that the canal was built by Americans for Americans, not for others.

The acquisition is expected to reduce Chinese influence in the region, according to people familiar with the discussions. The deal was made possible with Trump's support and involved several firms, including Global Infrastructure Partners and Terminal Investment Ltd. Fink's personal involvement was crucial in securing the deal, and he kept Trump informed throughout the rapid negotiations.
