Donald Trump has clarified that a
747 aircraft is a gift from the state of Qatar to the United States, not to him personally. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the aircraft "is a gift from the state of Qatar, a country we have successfully defended for many years." He emphasized that the plane will be used by the U.S. government as a temporary Air Force One until the delivery of a new Boeing aircraft, which he noted will be delayed.Trump questioned why the U.S. military and taxpayers should be forced to pay hundreds of millions of dollars to purchase the aircraft when a country that wants to reward the U.S. for its outstanding work can provide it for free. He reiterated that the aircraft is intended for the U.S. Department of Defense and not for his personal use. Trump also asserted that he will not use the plane after his term as president ends.
The Boeing 747-8, which is reportedly 13 years old, was custom-built for the Qatari royal family. It was initially intended to be used as the presidential aircraft, Air Force One, but its delivery has been repeatedly delayed by Boeing. Trump's clarification comes amid speculation and controversy surrounding the gift, with some questioning whether it constitutes a bribe rather than a gift.
Trump has previously expressed frustration with Boeing, citing delays and cost overruns in the delivery of the new Air Force One. The current Air Force One, a Boeing 747-200, is over 30 years old and has been in service since the 1990s. The new aircraft, which is based on
747-8, is expected to have advanced security features and improved technology. The controversy surrounding the Boeing 747 gift highlights the complex relationship between the U.S. and Qatar, as well as the challenges faced by the U.S. in acquiring new military equipment. The U.S. has a significant military presence in Qatar, with the Al Udeid Air Base serving as a critical hub for U.S. operations in the Middle East. The gift of the Boeing 747 aircraft is seen as a gesture of goodwill from Qatar to the U.S., but it has also raised questions about the ethics of accepting such gifts from foreign governments.
