Trump's demand for transparency comes amid ongoing debates over the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines and treatments. He cited "extraordinary" data from companies like Pfizer that he claims has not been made public. "They show me GREAT numbers and results, but they don’t seem to be showing them to many others," Trump wrote, urging the companies to release the data to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the public.
The lack of public data has fueled divisions within the CDC and given ammunition to critics like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Trump also cast doubt on Operation Warp Speed, the vaccine development program launched during his presidency, stressing that its reputation must be verified. "I hope OPERATION WARP SPEED was as ‘BRILLIANT’ as many say it was. If not, we all want to know about it, and why???" Trump said.
Pfizer and Moderna have released some data on their vaccines' efficacy through the FDA's website and their respective presentations. However, Trump has called for more transparency, saying that the public deserves to see the full data to address their concerns.
Trump's demand for transparency comes as the FDA has approved new rules and regulations for citizens to get vaccines. The latest vaccination strain was unanimously approved to be distributed this fall by the FDA's Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee.
Trump's remarks came shortly after he dismissed CDC Director Susan Monarez, following her refusal to step down. Four additional senior CDC officials also announced their departures from the agency last week, among them Demetre Daskalakis, who led the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.
