TRON's X Account Hacked, Users Warned of Malicious Messages
TRON's official X account was compromised on May 2, 2025, due to a social engineering attack. The hackers used the account to promote a contract address and sent direct messages to users, following suspicious accounts before tron regained control. TRON DAO has confirmed that any direct messages sent by its X account on May 2 should be disregarded, as they were part of the hackers' plan to distribute malicious information.
The attack began when one of TRON's team members fell victim to a social engineering hack. The hackers gained access to the team member's account, which allowed them to take control of the blockchain's master X account. Even after TRON recovered access, the attackers continued to contact others using the hijacked personal account. TRON has identified several X and Telegram addresses associated with the hackers and has contacted law enforcement officials, who are now involved in the case.
TRON founder Justin Sun requested that OKX freeze a wallet associated with the hack, alleging that stolen funds had been transferred to the exchange and that law enforcement had already sent a freeze notice to OKX’s official channel. However, OKX CEO Star Xu publicly dismissed the claim, stating that the exchange had not received any formal request. Xu challenged Sun to produce evidence of the request, which may have led to Sun deleting his initial post.
Despite the incident, TRON has continued its development efforts. The network recently released a new version of its Kant mainnet upgrade, which includes a redesign of its contract event system and enhanced API and node performance. These improvements are expected to enhance the blockchain's interaction with Ethereum and make it more secure and efficient. While these changes may not be immediately noticeable to general users, TRON explained that they are crucial for long-term development and aim to enable larger-sized operations and make the network more robust as a settlement framework.
