The reason is that AWS already has $496 billion in customer commitments — a backlog that grew $132 billion in a single quarter — and AmazonAMZN-- says it still can't build enough capacity to satisfy demand through 2027, let alone 2028.

The vision is easy to digest. The backlog is evidence.

The infrastructure bottleneck is the point

The market is transitioning from asking whether AI demand exists to asking who can deliver capacity. That shift matters because it turns infrastructure — the thing most investors think of as a cost center — into a bottleneck-driven profit engine.

Here's where AWS sits right now. Q2 2026 revenue reached $200.6 billion for Amazon overall, up 20% year over year. AWS contributed $42.2 billion in the quarter, up 37% year over year — the fastest growth rate in 18 quarters, putting the division on a $169 billion annualized run rate. AWS CEO Matt Garman said capacity is "spoken for" through 2028.

The AI and custom-chip businesses within AWS each exceeded $25 billion in annualized run rate with triple-digit growth. When he says "very possibly," he means the math works if cloud migration and AI adoption continue reinforcing each other. The current $169 billion annualized run rate would need to roughly six-fold to hit $1 trillion. That requires AWS to grow at roughly 30%+ compounded for the next decade or so.

The question isn't whether the TAM (total addressable market) for cloud infrastructure is large enough. The question is whether Amazon can sustain the growth acceleration that got it here — and whether the market is already pricing that growth in.

The valuation already moved

Demand is not the issue. The issue is whether the free cash flow hole widens enough to trigger the kind of multiple compression that catches growth stocks in a trap. Here's the frame I use: at current levels, Amazon's capex run rate exceeds its operating cash flow by roughly $12 billion on a trailing basis. If capex normalizes toward the $220 billion annual run rate while operating cash flow doesn't accelerate at a similar pace, the negative free cash flow could persist for several more quarters.

That matters because the stock's forward P/E of 41.6x already assumes earnings are growing rapidly. Sustained negative free cash flow doesn't break the thesis on its own — Amazon can fund this through existing cash and moderate leverage — but it does mean the return profile is back-half weighted. The trillion-dollar claim may not have a specific date attached, but the direction is clear.

However, the 15.6% post-earnings move changes the near-term return profile. At $2.94 trillion market cap and a forward P/E of 41.6x, the stock is no longer sitting at a discount to its own growth story. It's trading in line with it. The question is whether the back-half of that growth curve is worth holding for, or whether the risk/reward is more compelling elsewhere in the AI trade.

In my opinion, this is a position you manage through allocation, not conviction. If Amazon already represents a large position, I'd be comfortable holding but not adding at this level — the return from here is more back-half weighted, and the free cash flow risk deserves respect. If you're building a position, the setup is better after the next pullback, when the market resets from the earnings euphoria. The thesis doesn't change on a 10-15% correction; the entry just gets better.

The debate is not whether AWS remains the dominant cloud platform or whether AI demand will sustain. The debate is whether the return profile at $2.94 trillion is as compelling as what can be found in AI infrastructure names that haven't yet front-loaded the same move. Some of those names have worse balance sheets, but they also have more optionality from the current price level.

The break condition for my bullish view on AWS is simple: if AWS growth decelerates below 25% year over year for two consecutive quarters while capex stays above $200 billion, the earnings leverage story breaks and the forward P/E multiple compresses. I don't see that happening based on the current backlog. But I'm watching.
