A trader made a significant profit by investing in a Solana-based meme coin. The trader initially purchased $173 worth of TROLL tokens in mid-December 2024, when the token had a market capitalization of just $6,510. Over the next four months, the value of the token surged by over 361,500%, turning the trader's investment into $224,390.
Ask Aime: What factors contributed to the rapid rise of TROLL tokens?
The TROLL token was created in May 2024 on the launchpad Pump.fun and is based on the classic internet meme, the Trollface. The character, drawn by Carlos Ramirez in 2008, became one of the most popular memes of all time despite its origins as a webcomic about ineffective trolling.
TROLL initially struggled to gain traction, peaking at a market cap of $10,500 in January 2025 before dropping to $4,550 in April. However, on April 20, the token experienced a massive spike, increasing its market cap by 59,944% to $2.7 million. This upward trend continued, reaching a peak market cap of $27.37 million.
The trader acquired TROLL tokens with 0.8 SOL, approximately $173 at the time, on December 16. The funds were transferred to a new wallet three weeks later, along with other tokens. The trader then began selling their position slowly starting on April 21, as the value of their holdings continued to rise.
As of the latest update, the trader has made $103,900 in profits from the TROLL trade through 97 transactions. The wallet still holds $120,490 worth of TROLL, which could continue to appreciate or depreciate in value. The trader has not made any transactions for 11 hours as of the latest update.
TROLL has experienced significant volatility in the past 48 hours. After the trader's initial sales on April 21, the token's value dropped by almost 55% from $8.4 million to $3.8 million. It then surged to $15.8 million before crashing by 25%, and subsequently jumped to a market cap of $25 million on Wednesday.
Small investments in meme coins have occasionally led to substantial returns. For instance, a trader turned a $16 investment into $3 million in less than two weeks on PNUT, and another trader converted $5,000 into $1.5 million on GOAT. One of the most notable examples is a trader who turned $800 into $10 million by investing in the Moo Deng (MOODENG) pygmy hippo meme coin. However, despite the significant gains, the trader did not sell and lost most of their profits within a month.
Meme coins are known for their rapid fluctuations in value. Since reaching its all-time high market cap of $29.26 million, TROLL has dropped by 42% to $16.9 million, with the trader's balance also decreasing accordingly.
