TotalEnergies, Equinor, and Shell have transported the first CO2 volumes to Northern Lights, the world's first merchant CO2 transportation and storage project. The volumes were successfully transported from a cement factory in Brevik, Norway to the project's facilities in Oygarden, and injected into storage facilities 2,600 meters below the seabed. The project has a storage capacity of 1.5 Mt CO2/year, which has been fully booked by customers.
Norway's Northern Lights project, a joint venture between TotalEnergies, Equinor, and Shell, has successfully transported and stored the first volumes of CO2 from Heidelberg Materials' cement factory in Brevik, Norway, to its facilities in Øygarden. The CO2 was injected 2,600 meters below the seabed, marking a significant milestone in the project's operations.
The Northern Lights project, the world's first merchant CO2 transportation and storage facility, has a storage capacity of 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 per year, which has been fully booked by customers. The project's first phase, operational since 2024, includes a terminal to receive CO2 cargoes, a 100-kilometer subsea pipeline, and subsea injection facilities for permanent storage [2].
The successful transport and storage of CO2 volumes from the Heidelberg Materials plant to Northern Lights demonstrate the project's operational capabilities and its potential to support the decarbonization of European industry. The project has already secured commitments from five industrial customers, including Hafslund Celsio and Heidelberg Materials in Norway, Yara in the Netherlands, Ørsted in Denmark, and Stockholm Exergi in Sweden [1].
The second phase of the project, scheduled to begin in 2028, will increase the project's capacity to more than 5 million tonnes of CO2 per year, supported by a Final Investment Decision (FID) announced in March 2025 [2]. This expansion will leverage existing infrastructure and include new onshore storage tanks, pumps, a jetty, injection wells, and transport vessels.
The Northern Lights project is a critical component of the European Union's efforts to decarbonize industry and achieve its climate goals. With the successful transport and storage of CO2 volumes, the project is now well-positioned to play a significant role in the global race to decarbonize industry [3].
