Tether Buys 8,888 BTC for $734M, Boosting Holdings to 92,646.57
Tether Holdings Ltd., the leading issuer of the stablecoin USDT, has capitalized on the recent dip in Bitcoin's price by purchasing 8,888 BTC. This strategic move, known as a "buy-the-dip" strategy, was executed at a total valuation of approximately $734 million. The acquisition brings Tether's total Bitcoin holdings to 92,646.57 units, with an average purchase price of $82,591.34 per BTC, totaling around $7.65 billion.
Tether's Bitcoin accumulation began in December 2023, and the company has consistently increased its holdings since then. This is the third instance where Tether has purchased exactly 8,888 BTC. Previously, on December 31, 2023, Tether acquired 8,888 BTC for $379 million, and on March 31, 2024, it purchased the same amount for over $627 million. These acquisitions underscore Tether's commitment to Bitcoin and its belief in the cryptocurrency's long-term value.
Tether's latest purchase is part of a broader trend of firms accumulating Bitcoin. MicroStrategyMSTR--, led by Michael Saylor, recently acquired over $2 billion worth of Bitcoin, bringing its total holdings to 528,000 coins. Other firms, such as Metaplanet and Semler ScientificSMLR--, have also been making smaller Bitcoin purchases. Many of these companies have adopted a debt-funded strategy to finance their Bitcoin acquisitions, aiming to enhance the long-term viability of their investments.
Despite these significant acquisitions, the price of Bitcoin has not seen a substantial increase. At the time of the purchase, Bitcoin was trading at approximately $83,523.19, reflecting a 2.13% increase over the past 24 hours. This suggests that the market has not yet fully priced in the massive intake of Bitcoin by these firms. Tether's move, however, signals its confidence in Bitcoin's future prospects and its intention to hold a significant portion of its reserves in the cryptocurrency.
