Tesla (TSLA.US) wins new patent, FSD beta rollout imminent

Tesla (TSLA.US) on Tuesday received a patent for a system and method for adapting neural network models to a hardware platform. The patent application traces back to March 16, 2023.

Independent patent researcher SETI Park speculated on social media site X that Tesla's patent may be related to implementing FSD on other brands. The company has not yet released any specific information about FSD licensing.

The patent application states that the method includes obtaining information about a neural network model, covering decision points associated with the neural network, one or more first decision points associated with the layout of the neural network. It also notes that machine learning applications often require the implementation and/or configuration of neural networks on platforms that have not been implemented before.

"For example, an autonomous vehicle may limit its artificial intelligence system to use relatively limited hardware to implement a neural network, which may limit the hardware platform in terms of implementation and performance. There is also an increasing demand for machine learning and deep learning on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. To implement deep learning and other computationally intensive technologies, the neural network model must be adapted to generate a configuration that satisfies all constraints of the platform."

It is known that as early as last year, Tesla CEO Musk said in a conference call that the company is researching licensing its full self-driving driving assistance technology FSD to another large automaker.

Musk said: "Just like the North American Charging Standard (NACS), we are open to licensing our FSD hardware and software to other car companies. We have had early discussions with a large OEM about using Tesla FSD."
