According to Cox Automotive, Tesla's (TSLA.US) Cybertruck has significantly closed the gap with the Ford (F.US) F-150 Lightning in the second quarter, selling 850 more vehicles than the F-150 Lightning. The Cybertruck is the most popular car above $100,000 in June, with an average transaction price of $112,696.
Ford sold about 15,645 F-150 Lightning vehicles in the first half of the year, while Tesla ranked second with 11,558 Cybertrucks, easily beating the 6,570 Rivian R1T (RIVN.US) and 4,597 GMC Hummer trucks. A Rivian factory closure was also a factor. The F-150 Lightning is a Ford-developed all-electric pickup.
Cox Automotive CEO Stephanie Winklevoss Strickland said: "In Q2, Cybertruck volume reached 8,755, a remarkable achievement in the electrified pickup market." She pointed to the impact of reservations and pent-up demand and warned that assessing sustained performance would be critical to long-term success for the model.
The InEVs highlighted that the electric pickup market remains complex and that electric pickup sales are still far behind electric cars and hybrid SUVs (sport utility vehicles). High prices and limited capacity are seen as factors that suppress demand compared to gasoline trucks used for heavy towing and hauling.
