Tesla starts selling regular Model Y in China with up to 10-week wait time
The electric vehicle (EV) landscape is abuzz with the latest developments surrounding Tesla's refreshed Model Y. With the first deliveries officially underway in China, the automotive world is eager to gauge the demand for this highly anticipated vehicle.
Tesla's latest announcement comes after the company launched the updated Model Y in China late last month. Initially, Tesla only began delivering the Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) variant, but now, the automaker has opened orders for the non-Launch Edition and the Standard Range Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) models [1].
However, recent reports suggest that Tesla's Chinese delivery estimates are less than promising. According to Tesla's updated configurator, new orders for the RWD Model Y placed today are expected to be delivered within "2 to 4 weeks," while the Long Range AWD Model Y takes a bit longer, with estimated delivery times ranging from "6 to 10 weeks" [1].
These delivery estimates raise questions about the demand for the new Model Y in China. While it's true that Tesla has experienced significant success in the Chinese market, recent insurance data indicates that Tesla's deliveries in 2023 are currently down by approximately 7,000 units compared to the same period in 2022 [2].
Despite these mixed signals, it's essential to note that Tesla's production ramp for the Model Y appears to be going smoothly. As such, demand might be the more significant factor influencing the automaker's delivery times and overall sales performance.
In conclusion, Tesla's new Model Y has officially begun deliveries in China, but the demand picture remains unclear. While the initial delivery estimates suggest soft demand for the RWD version, it's crucial to monitor Tesla's sales figures closely as the automaker works to ramp up production and meet customer demand.
