In March 2025, Tesla signed a lease deal to open its first showroom in Mumbai, with the event scheduled to take place at the Bandra Kurla Complex [2]. The showroom, dubbed an "experience center," is expected to be around 4000 sq ft and will operate under Tesla's Direct-to-Customer retail model [4].
Tesla's entry into the Indian market is significant, given the country's large and growing automotive market. The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has been courting Tesla, offering policies to attract the carmaker to build its EVs locally. However, Tesla has indicated it is not interested in manufacturing in India at the moment, opting instead to sell imported cars [3]. The company has already imported vehicles, chargers, and accessories worth close to $1 million into India, mainly from China and the United States [3].
Tesla has been ramping up its hiring efforts in India, advertising for various positions including store managers, sales and service executives, and supply chain engineers [3]. The company is also looking for Autopilot test drivers in Mumbai and Delhi [4]. The first models to be offered in India are expected to be the Model 3 and Model Y, with test mules already spotted on Indian roads [4].
