Tesla's Optimus Robot: Dazzling AI or Misleading Showcase?
Tesla's humanoid robot, Optimus, has stirred debate due to its remote operation capabilities. Nonetheless, Nvidia's Robotics Division head, Rev Lebaredian, asserts that Tesla's AI technology should not be underestimated. Even remote control showcases impressive technical prowess.
At last week's Tesla autonomous taxi event, Optimus was a focal point, performing tasks like dancing and pouring drinks, demonstrating intelligence. However, subsequent reports confirmed that Tesla engineers controlled the robot remotely during the demonstration. This revelation led some analysts and investors to criticize Tesla for what they perceived as a misleading display.
Rev Lebaredian, vice president of Nvidia's Omniverse and simulation technology, believes Optimus deserves more recognition rather than reproach. He admits uncertainty about the extent of the remote control but emphasizes that achieving such precision requires highly advanced AI technology.
With 23 years at Nvidia, Lebaredian views Tesla's showcase of Optimus as a significant technical achievement. He acknowledges skepticism as natural for any new technology but stresses the importance of robotic control in real-world interactions as a substantial leap forward.
