Tesla Cybertruck door design controversy: user finger injury raises safety concerns
July 18, Beijing – Tesla Cybertruck’s unique design has once again become the focus of public discussion, this time due to a safety concern raised by a user injury incident. According to Carscoops, a well-known automotive news platform, a Cybertruck owner’s father-in-law was injured when he tried to open the vehicle door and his finger was caught between the door and the frame, resulting in severe lacerations and seven stitches and a splint at the hospital.
The incident was made public by Cybertruck owner club member SpykeDaddy on social media, who detailed the unfortunate encounter. He said, “We were all shocked by this incident. My father-in-law was injured when he tried to open the Cybertruck door and his finger was caught between the door and the frame, causing serious injuries. Although I am full of praise for the performance and design of Cybertruck, this incident has made me realize that there may be some safety issues in the vehicle design.”
The controversy centered on Cybertruck’s signature “hidden door handle” design. Unlike traditional vehicles with protruding door handles, Cybertruck uses a hidden button to control the opening and closing of the doors, aiming to create a more streamlined and futuristic vehicle appearance. However, this innovative design has turned into a potential safety risk in certain situations. Specifically, Cybertruck’s front door button is located between the front and rear doors, making it easy for passengers in the back seat to close the door or for those in the front seat to reach for the door handle, causing fingers to get caught between the door and the frame.
SpykeDaddy’s experience serves as a reminder to Cybertruck owners to exercise caution when using the vehicle to prevent such accidents. He wrote in the post, “I hope my experience can raise awareness among all Cybertruck owners, recognize this potential safety issue, and be more cautious when operating the vehicle.” At the same time, he expressed his expectations for Tesla, hoping the company can reconsider the location of the door handle design or take other preventive measures to reduce the likelihood of such accidents and ensure user safety.
The design controversy of Tesla Cybertruck once again highlights the delicate balance between automotive innovation and safety, as well as the responsibility that automakers should bear when pursuing unique designs. As the incident unfolds, how Tesla responds and addresses this safety concern will become the focus of the industry and users alike.
