Tencent-backed Game Science has released a trailer for "Black Myth: Zhong Kui," a follow-up to last year's hit "Black Myth: Wukong." The new action role-playing game is inspired by a mythical ghost-catching figure in ancient Chinese folklore. The trailer has gained over 9 million views on Bilibili, but no release date has been announced.

The trailer features Zhong Kui, an imposing red-bearded character, riding a majestic tiger with two demons carrying a giant sword. The game is set against the backdrop of the classic Chinese folktale "Zhong Kui Banishing Evil" and is described as a single-player action role-playing game rooted in ancient Chinese fantasy. Game Science has stated that the game will deliver distinctive experiences and gameplay features while also bringing fresh ideas and necessary changes to address past flaws and regrets [2].

Fans are excited about the new project, but some are puzzled by the decision to embark on a new game while many are still waiting for new downloadable content (DLC) for the Wukong game. Game Science founder Feng Ji responded on Weibo, stating that while a DLC would be a good option, the company is more focused on creating a brand-new Black Myth game with new heroes, new gameplay, new visuals, new technology, and a new story [3].

Black Myth: Wukong, released on August 20, 2024, sold millions of copies and topped Steam's most-played games chart with 1.4 million concurrent player hours after its release. The game has been widely lauded as China's first AAA game, igniting strong interest in more such games from China and being applauded by Beijing as a way of promoting Chinese culture [3].

Game Science revealed the first gameplay footage of Black Myth: Wukong exactly five years ago, attracting millions of views and thrusting the then little-known studio into the limelight. The studio has since gained significant attention and has been working on expanding its Black Myth series, with Zhong Kui as the latest addition [1].
