Recent U.S. airstrikes on Iran's nuclear facilities have not succeeded in destroying the country's nuclear capabilities, according to early intelligence assessments. The strikes, which targeted three key nuclear sites, including the Fordo facility, have only set back Iran's nuclear program by a few months. This assessment contradicts President Trump's claims that the strikes had completely obliterated Iran's nuclear enrichment facilities.
The U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the intelligence assessment by the Defense Intelligence Agency indicated that the strikes did not achieve the intended goal of destroying Iran's nuclear program. The assessment was shared with select senators, including Virginia's Mark Warner, the leading Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee. Warner expressed concerns about the next steps and the potential for Iran to accelerate its nuclear program.
Iranian officials have also responded to the strikes, with the Speaker of Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stating that Iran would continue to enrich uranium despite international demands to stop. The head of Iran's Atomic Energy Agency, Hamad Eslami, confirmed that the country was assessing the damage but had prepared in advance to ensure no interruption in production.
Experts have warned that Iran's nuclear capabilities are not solely dependent on its facilities but also on its deep knowledge and expertise, making it difficult to completely eliminate its nuclear program through military strikes. The U.S. airstrikes have damaged core components of Iran's nuclear effort but have not destroyed them, according to the Defense Intelligence Agency assessment.
