Google is revising its "Work from Anywhere" (WFA) policy, marking a significant shift toward stricter remote work limitations. The updated policy, revealed in internal documents reviewed by CNBC and other outlets, stipulates that even a single day of remote work will now count as a full week against employees' annual WFA allowance. This change, which took effect following summer 2025, replaces the previous structure that allowed up to four weeks of remote work per year, with each week logged as such. The policy is distinct from Google's existing hybrid schedule, which permits employees to work from home two days per week.
The WFA update reflects a broader industry trend among tech firms to reduce remote flexibility and prioritize in-office collaboration.
, for example, announced in 2025 that it would require employees to work in offices three days a week starting next year, while mandated a five-day in-office schedule for corporate staff. Google's move aligns with these efforts, as CEO Sundar Pichai and other executives emphasize the importance of in-person interactions for innovation and problem-solving. The company also cited "legal and financial implications of cross-border work" as a key rationale, prohibiting employees from working in offices in different states or countries during WFA periods.Employee reactions to the change have been mixed. During a recent all-hands meeting, staff raised concerns about the new rules, with one top-rated internal question describing the policy as "confusing" and asking why "even one day of WFA counts as a whole week." John Casey, Google's Vice President of Performance and Rewards, defended the update, stating that WFA was "meant to meet Googlers where they were during the pandemic" but was "always intended to be taken in increments of a week," not as a substitute for hybrid work. The policy also excludes roles requiring physical presence, such as data center workers, and violations could result in disciplinary action or termination.
The shift underscores Google's broader strategy to balance flexibility with operational demands. In 2025, the company began offering voluntary buyouts to remote workers and warned that non-compliance with hybrid schedules could lead to layoffs. This aligns with a sector-wide push to reassert in-office mandates, as companies like Apple and Meta have also introduced stricter attendance requirements. Analysts note that such policies risk morale and retention, particularly among employees who value remote flexibility. Kelsey Szamet of Kingsley Szament Employment Lawyers highlighted that policy changes can "take a tangible toll on morale and retention," especially for workers who joined under semi- or fully remote assumptions.
Google's WFA policy is part of a larger recalibration of post-pandemic work norms. While the company maintains its hybrid schedule, the new rules signal a pivot toward in-office collaboration, mirroring trends across the tech industry. As remote work becomes increasingly regulated, the effectiveness of these policies in balancing productivity, employee satisfaction, and legal compliance will remain a critical focus for employers and employees alike.
