Recently, the smart glasses sector has seen a surge of interest, with major tech giants like Meta and several startups venturing into this emerging market. In 2022, the global smart glasses market was valued at $1.23 billion, and it is projected to grow at an annual rate of 27% by 2030.
While consumers may still be deciding whether to invest in expensive headsets, tech leaders are increasingly focusing on the more promising smart glasses market. Notably, AI glasses stocks have surged since mid-August, with domestic giants such as Huawei and Xiaomi continually launching new smart glasses products.
Avi Greengart, president and lead analyst at Techsponential, believes there are significant opportunities for innovation in this sector, particularly given that major players like Apple and Google have yet to make their moves. Meta is expected to unveil its much-anticipated AR glasses, Orion, at the Meta Connect 2024 event later this month. Mark Zuckerberg described smart glasses as the ultimate embodiment of AI due to their ability to integrate our real-world environment with digital interactions.
Meta's Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, added that these glasses are akin to a "time machine to the future," embodying years of effort and substantial investment. Meta’s initial production will be limited to 1,000 units for internal use and developer testing, laying the groundwork for a consumer-facing AR glasses model named Artemi, anticipated to launch in 2027.
Meta continues to improve its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, incorporating features such as an AI assistant powered by Meta’s Llama model. This iteration allows users to make calls, send messages, take photos, and even live stream on social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook. The sales are projected to exceed 2 million units in 2024, marking them as a significant AI hardware development.
It's not just the big tech firms that are entering the fray; startups are also making notable advances. Miami-based Innovative Eyewear saw its sales double after integrating ChatGPT into their glasses, enabling hands-free interactions with OpenAI's chatbot. Another company, Solos, has launched modular smart glasses capable of providing AI-powered updates on weather, news, and stock markets.
Despite the excitement surrounding AI glasses, the market outlook remains uncertain. Historical precedents like Google Glass and Intel’s Vault glasses show that achieving widespread adoption is challenging due to technical and user experience obstacles. Experts agree that for AI glasses to become mainstream, they must overcome these technical hurdles and fulfill diverse consumer demands for style, comfort, and functionality.
Jitesh Ubrani, a research manager at IDC responsible for wearable devices, pointed out that despite Meta’s efforts to sell AI glasses through typical eyewear channels, their overall adoption remains low compared to traditional glasses. Unless AI glasses offer substantial utility and can seamlessly integrate into daily life without appearing overly futuristic, widespread consumer adoption may remain elusive.
In conclusion, while AI glasses currently garner significant attention, the path to widespread market penetration is riddled with challenges, requiring further technological advancements and alignment with consumer expectations for everyday usability.
