Tate's apparent freedom comes after the Trump administration reportedly applied pressure on Romanian authorities to lift travel restrictions on the controversial influencer. The Financial Times reported that U.S. officials mentioned the Tates' case to the Romanian government on a phone call, and later, Trump sent an envoy to meet with Romanian foreign minister Emil Hurezeanu. The minister later confirmed on Romanian TV that the envoy brought up the brothers, although he did not see this as a "form of pressure."

On Thursday, Romania's Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) issued a statement regarding two defendants of dual U.S.-British citizenships with media interest surrounding them, which many believe to be the Tate brothers.
