Dolphin Sands, a small east-coast Tasmanian locality, has been ravaged by a bushfire that destroyed 19 houses or shacks, 15 outbuildings, and four vehicles. Despite the constant threat of fire, residents are unwilling to leave the area, citing its beauty and native wildlife. Diane Bricknell, who has lived there permanently since 2003, said she and her family are realists and pragmatic about the risks, but hope for the best. The fire service has contained the blaze, and residents are waiting to see what has become of their properties.
