Tariffs Could Cost Average Family $4,700 Annually
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has sounded the alarm on the potential impact of tariffs proposed by the Trump administration, warning that these tariffs could result in significant financial losses for American households. According to Beshear, the tariffs could cost an average family nearly $5,000 annually.
In a social media post, Beshear highlighted the severe financial strain this could place on families, stating that the additional $4,700 could equate to several months' worth of groceries, rent, or even a year's deductible for private health insurance. He emphasized that no family could weather such a financial blow without serious consequences, particularly for those struggling to make ends meet at the end of the month.
The $4,700 estimate is based on a recent analysis by the Budget Lab at Yale University. The analysis found that even under the Trump administration's proposed "minimum threshold" of an additional 10% tax on nearly all imported goods, the average consumer household would lose $4,700. Another analysis by the Peterson Institute for International Economics suggested that the increased cost for a middle-class family might be closer to $1,700. Both analyses agreed that low-income families would be the most severely affected.
Analysts also warned that consumers looking to purchase big-ticket items like new cars or smartphones could face significant price shocks. The American Bank estimated that even if automakers absorbed part of the tariff impact, new tariffs could drive up the average price of a car by $4,500. This comes on top of recent years' substantial price increases, which have pushed the average price of a new car to a staggering $48,000.
Additionally, if tariffs remain in place, it is widely expected that AppleAAPL-- will raise the prices of iPhones and other popular products, given that a significant portion of the company's supply chain is based in China. The price of the iPhone 16 Pro Max could increase by 29%, potentially raising the starting price from $1,200 to $1,550, according to estimates.
Daily necessities such as food and clothing are also expected to see price increases. The Trump administration hopes that tariffs will bring job opportunities back to the United States. Officials acknowledge that tariffs could lead to price increases. Last month, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated, "Obtaining cheap goods is not the essence of the American dream."
Economists are concerned that the trade war could significantly slow global trade and potentially trigger an economic recession, leading to further economic repercussions. The World Trade Organization warned that due to the impact of the Trump administration's tariff policies, the expected growth rate of global trade for this year has sharply declined, and there is a risk of further deterioration.
