SWIFT has chosen Linea, an Ethereum-based layer 2 blockchain, for on-chain bank messaging, disappointing XRP fans who had hoped to either displace SWIFT or adopt the XRP Ledger's messaging system. SWIFT's interbank messaging system is under development on Linea, with BNP Paribas and BNY working on pilot programs. XRP's failed attempts to target SWIFT have left the community disappointed.

SWIFT has chosen Linea, an Ethereum-based layer 2 blockchain, to pilot its transition from traditional interbank messaging to blockchain-based communications. This move comes as a disappointment to XRP fans who had hoped to either displace SWIFT or adopt the XRP Ledger's messaging system. The selection of Linea marks SWIFT's entry into blockchain technology, following its announcement of a digital asset initiative in September 2024.

The global banking consortium has selected Linea for its advanced cryptographic proofs, which ensure transaction confidentiality while maintaining regulatory compliance. The network's connection to Ethereum provides established infrastructure, while layer-2 technology reduces transaction costs. The pilot program, which includes BNP Paribas and BNY Mellon, will examine both messaging transitions and the integration of stablecoins.

The selection of Linea over the XRP Ledger has left the XRP community disappointed. XRP's failed attempts to target SWIFT have been a recurring theme in the community's efforts to expand the token's utility. The XRP community has long advocated for the adoption of the XRP Ledger's messaging system, but SWIFT's choice of Linea indicates a preference for a more established blockchain infrastructure.

The pilot program is expected to take several months to complete, with the results promising a major technological transformation for the international interbank payments industry. This move is part of Swift's broader blockchain integration efforts, which include participation in the Bank for International Settlements’ Project Agora and collaboration with central bank digital currency initiatives.
