A new study says Apple's App Store generated $1.3 trillion in sales and billings in 2024. - yahoo
A new study by economists Professor Andrey Fradkin from Boston University and Dr. Jessica Burley from Analysis Group reveals that Apple's App Store generated $1.3 trillion in billings and sales in 2024. The report, released ahead of Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference, highlights the significant financial opportunities created for mobile developers through the App Store. The study found that 90% of the $1.3 trillion in billings and sales did not involve Apple taking a commission. Digital goods and services accounted for $131 billion, with mobile games, photo and video editing apps, and enterprise tools driving the growth. Physical goods and services, including online food delivery and grocery apps, totaled $1 trillion. In-app advertising revenue reached $150 billion in 2024.
Since 2019, spending across digital goods and services, physical goods and services, and in-app advertising has more than doubled. Physical goods and services experienced the strongest growth, increasing by more than 2.6 times. Digital goods and services also saw steady growth, reflecting increased demand for games and apps supporting content creation. In-app advertising revenue has helped keep many apps free or low-cost for users.
The report underscores the App Store's role in facilitating global commerce, attracting over 813 million average weekly visitors worldwide. Over the last five years, billings and sales facilitated by the App Store ecosystem more than doubled in the U.S., China, and Europe. Digital payment spending grew over seven-fold in the U.S. since 2019, while food delivery and pickup spending more than tripled in Europe.
Apple's investment in developers is evident in the tools and technologies provided, including Xcode and TestFlight for app development, App Analytics for performance monitoring, and Product Page Optimization for improving app performance. Apple also offers extensive support and resources for developers, with centers in the U.S., China, India, and Singapore hosting tens of thousands of developers annually.
Apple's commitment to supporting developers extends to online and in-person programs, including Meet with Apple sessions, appointments, and labs, as well as 24/7 access to Apple Support. The company's integrated payment system has protected users from over $9 billion in fraudulent transactions in the last five years.
The study underscores the App Store's role in fostering innovation and economic growth, providing a platform for developers to reach a global audience and generate substantial revenue.
