US Stocks Gain 1.7% Amid Consumer Cyclicals Rise and Utilities Fall

The US stock market rose 1.7% for the week ended Jan. 9, led by gains in consumer cyclicals and basic materials. Utilities and technology were the worst-performing sectors. Large-cap stocks gained 1.35%, while small-cap stocks rose 3.65%. SanDisk and Bloom Energy were the top performers, while First Solar was the worst performer. Yields on 10-year US Treasury notes fell to 4.18% from 4.19%, and West Texas Intermediate crude prices rose 2.58% to $58.81 per barrel.
