US stock futures fall as government enters shutdown. - Yahoo
US stock futures have pulled back as the US government barrels toward a government shutdown beginning Wednesday at 12:01 a.m. ET. Futures attached to the Dow Jones Industrial Average (YM=F) slipped 0.1%, while those attached to the benchmark S&P 500 (ES=F) and the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 (NQ=F) fell 0.2% .The Senate struck down a Democratic and Republican bill to keep the government funded on Tuesday evening, making a shutdown all but certain. This will mark the first government shutdown in nearly seven years. Federal agencies will have to implement contingency plans and send scores of workers home, with threats from President Trump that "a lot" of firings are to come .
Among the agencies set to be frozen by a shutdown is the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), which releases economic data key to Federal Reserve policy decisions. The BLS was set to release the September jobs report on Friday, but all signs point to the report not arriving as planned. The BLS has said that it plans to "completely cease operations" and temporarily go from a workforce of 2,055 to just one full-time employee .
Stocks on Tuesday, however, brushed off Washington's gridlock, closing out their strongest third quarter since 2020. Investors also weighed fresh tariffs from the Trump administration alongside upbeat earnings from Nike (NKE) .
On Wednesday, in addition to contending with a government funding lapse, investors will receive data on ADP private payrolls and earnings from Levi Strauss (LEVI) .
The US government is on the brink of a shutdown after the Senate rejected dueling spending plans, with funding expiring at midnight. A partial government shutdown looms, with thousands of workers set to be furloughed or laid off .
