StellarJet, a Texas-based company, has announced two revolutionary technologies in the field of hydrogen-powered aviation: a solid-state hydrogen storage device and a new generation of electric ducted fan (EDF) propulsion systems. These innovations, unveiled ahead of the 2025 Paris Air Show, place
at the forefront of the global race towards zero-emission aviation. The solid-state hydrogen storage tank, utilizing metal hydride technology, achieves a 23% weight hydrogen storage density and an energy density of 6.6 kilowatt-hours per kilogram, outperforming liquid hydrogen systems. This device operates safely within a pressure range of 20-350 bar and a temperature range of -60°C to +80°C, supporting rapid refueling within 30 minutes without the risk of evaporation loss. StellarJet's CEO, Alexey Popov, emphasized the scalability and safety of this storage solution, stating that it marks a turning point for the aviation industry.
The EDF propulsion unit delivers 132 kilowatts of power, 1700 newtons of thrust, and weighs only 14.7 kilograms, with a duct diameter of 375 millimeters. This unit is optimized for StellarJet's distributed electric propulsion design. Both technologies, developed entirely in-house, will be integrated into the StellarJet Demonstrator, a hydrogen-powered verification aircraft scheduled for its maiden flight in the summer of 2025.
Leveraging its expertise from collaborations in aerospace and
technology, StellarJet holds a competitive edge in the aviation decarbonization race. Its compact, airworthy hydrogen storage system addresses the safety and cost challenges associated with liquid hydrogen, attracting attention from the aerospace and industrial sectors. However, challenges remain in scaling production and developing hydrogen refueling infrastructure. Some users on certain platforms have raised concerns about the complexity of the certification process, which could impact the commercialization timeline. These breakthroughs by StellarJet represent a significant advancement in the pursuit of sustainable aviation. By tackling critical issues in hydrogen storage and propulsion, the company is laying the groundwork for a future where aircraft can operate without emitting harmful greenhouse gases. StellarJet's innovations are not only a demonstration of its technological capabilities but also a crucial step towards achieving global carbon emission reduction goals in the aviation industry. As the world continues to seek sustainable solutions, StellarJet's advancements in hydrogen-powered aviation are set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of air travel.
