Stellantis Stock Surges to Top Trading Volume Despite Price Drop

Stellantis has recently secured a U.S. patent for a three-speed gear reducer designed for electric drive modules (EDMs). This innovation is set to enhance the performance and efficiency of electric vehicles (EVs) across its various brands. The patent, filed on October 25, 2023, and granted on May 1, 2025, introduces a compact yet powerful solution that aims to balance off-road capability with highway efficiency, addressing a common challenge in single-speed EV designs.

The new gear reducer utilizes two planetary gearsets and four strategically placed clutches to create three distinct gear ratios within a single electric drive unit. This design allows for seamless shifting between gears, enhancing the vehicle's performance across different terrains and speeds. The three gear modes include a low-range gear for towing and off-road conditions, a high-range gear for normal driving, and a direct drive mode for maximum efficiency at highway speeds.

This patent demonstrates Stellantis' commitment to integrating advanced technology into mainstream EVs, from Ram pickup trucks and Jeep SUVs to performance Dodge EVs and Chrysler family haulers. The three-speed gearbox is designed to provide true low-range gearing for off-roaders and efficient highway cruising, improving real-world range and reducing battery drain. The system also supports differential control, making it ideal for EVs that require sophisticated drivetrain management.

While Stellantis has not yet announced which vehicle will debut with this new gearbox, it is speculated that upcoming electric trucks from Ram, electrified off-roaders from Jeep, and new-generation muscle cars from Dodge could benefit from this technology. The compact design of the gearbox makes it suitable for various EV platforms, including smaller crossovers and all-wheel-drive (AWD) vehicles.
