SpaceX has faced a series of setbacks in 2024 and 2025 with multiple test flights of its Starship rocket system failing to meet their objectives, raising questions about the timeline for key NASA missions and the broader development of the vehicle. The recent failures, including a series of in-flight explosions and a ground test mishap in June, have delayed critical milestones such as in-orbit refueling and full reusability demonstrations. The latest incident occurred on June 18 when a Starship upper stage, designated Ship 36, exploded during a ground test at SpaceX’s Starbase facility in South Texas. This followed a May 27 flight—Starship Flight 9—where the spacecraft lost control after separating from the Super Heavy booster and ultimately disintegrated during reentry [4].
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has concluded its investigation into these failures and cleared SpaceX to proceed with the 10th Starship test flight, scheduled for no earlier than August 24, 2025. According to the FAA, SpaceX’s internal investigation identified a failure in the fuel pressurization system of the May 27 flight as a key factor in the loss of control. A high-pressure nitrogen storage tank, known as a composite overwrapped pressure vessel (COPV), was found to be the cause of the June explosion. SpaceX has since implemented design changes to mitigate similar failures, including reduced operating pressures for COPVs and enhanced inspection protocols [1].
SpaceX has responded to these setbacks by accelerating internal changes to both the Super Heavy booster and the Starship upper stage. The company has shifted a portion of its engineering resources from the Falcon 9 program to Starship, aiming to address technical challenges and streamline development. Recent modifications to the Super Heavy include redesigned grid fins, which will improve vehicle control and allow for greater flexibility in descent trajectories. These updates are intended to support future test objectives such as controlled reentry of the upper stage and in-orbit refueling, both of which are essential for Starship’s long-term goals [3].
Despite these setbacks, SpaceX has emphasized that iterative testing remains a core part of its development philosophy. The company has previously demonstrated success with its Falcon 9 and Starlink programs, and has maintained that failures provide valuable data for refining spacecraft design. According to SpaceX, the next two test flights—Flights 10 and 11—will be the final tests of the current Starship version before transitioning to an upgraded design. These flights aim to expand the rocket’s capabilities and lay the groundwork for fully reusable, high-performance space systems [2].
The delays and technical hurdles have also introduced uncertainty for NASA’s Artemis 3 mission, which relies on Starship as the lunar lander. NASA had initially aimed to use the system for a crewed mission to the moon as early as 2025, but the recent test failures have not alleviated concerns about potential schedule delays. With Starship still unable to complete a full orbital flight, the agency faces pressure to ensure that the rocket is ready to meet the 2027 target date. SpaceX has acknowledged the importance of these upcoming flights in maintaining momentum and regaining confidence in the system’s reliability [5].
