On Wednesday night, a SpaceX Starship prototype, designated Starship 36, suffered a catastrophic failure and exploded during a routine static fire test at the Starbase launch facility in Texas. The incident occurred shortly after 11:00 pm local time, as captured in a video shared by local authorities. The megarocket, attached to the launch arm, was engulfed in a fiery explosion, marking the latest setback in Elon Musk's ambitious quest to make humanity an interplanetary species.

During such tests, the Starship’s Super Heavy booster is anchored to the ground to prevent it from lifting off during the test-firing. Standing at 403 feet tall, Starship is the world’s largest and most powerful rocket, central to Musk’s long-term vision of colonizing Mars. The rocket is designed to be fully reusable with a payload capacity of up to 150 metric tons. The latest setback follows a series of previous incidents, including an explosion of a prototype Starship over the Indian Ocean in late May. The previous two outings also ended poorly, with the upper stage disintegrating over the Caribbean.
Despite these failures, SpaceX remains undeterred in its mission. The company has embraced a "fail fast, learn fast" ethos, which has helped it dominate commercial spaceflight. SpaceX has successfully caught the Super Heavy booster in the launch tower’s giant robotic arms three times, a daring engineering feat seen as key to rapid reusability and cost reduction. NASA relies heavily on SpaceX, whose Dragon spacecraft is vital for ferrying astronauts to and from the International Space Station.
The Federal Aviation Administration approved an increase in annual Starship rocket launches from five to 25 in early May, stating that the increased frequency would not adversely impact the environment. This decision overruled objections from conservation groups who had warned that the expansion could endanger local wildlife. SpaceX continues to push forward, undeterred by setbacks, as it works towards its goal of making space travel more accessible and affordable.
