Starbucks Shifts Focus to Employees, Reduces Equipment Reliance
Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol has announced that the company's recent business improvements will lead to a reduced reliance on equipment and a greater emphasis on employees. This shift comes as part of the company's "Back to Starbucks" business transformation plan, which aims to enhance the overall customer experience and create a more inviting atmosphere in its stores.
Niccol highlighted that the company is leveraging algorithms and new labor models to expedite service times. The high-tech "Siren" equipment, previously seen as a universal solution, is no longer considered as such. Instead, StarbucksSBUX-- is focusing on creating a more social and welcoming environment within its stores, which includes redesigning the store layout to better accommodate customers.
During a recent conference call, Niccol mentioned that while the company's earnings for the past quarter were disappointing, the "Back to Starbucks" plan is showing signs of progress. More customers are choosing to stay longer in the stores, and the rate of transaction decline has slowed down. These changes are expected to drive the company's future growth.
Looking ahead, Niccol stated that Starbucks will rely more on its employees and less on equipment. The company is exploring the possibility of baking food in-store and is considering the introduction of a new afternoon tea menu. This shift in strategy is part of a broader effort to enhance the customer experience and create a more inviting atmosphere in its stores.
One of the key initiatives is the implementation of an algorithm that helps baristas manage orders more efficiently. This tool has been piloted in 400 stores and is expected to be rolled out to more locations. The algorithm has helped many stores serve customers in under four minutes for drive-thru and in-store orders, and complete mobile orders within 12 minutes. This ensures that mobile orders do not pile up at the counter, maintaining a calm and welcoming environment.
Niccol also mentioned that by making it easier for employees to choose and swap shifts, Starbucks has been able to reduce employee turnover. The company is now focusing more on its workforce and less on high-tech equipment like the "Siren" beverage-making system, which will be used selectively rather than widely deployed.
Starbucks is also taking steps to encourage customers to spend more time in its stores. The company is offering free refills and redesigning store layouts to include different types of seating. These changes are expected to be implemented in stores in New York City and Southern California soon. Additionally, Starbucks is exploring the possibility of baking and assembling food in-store, similar to what is already being done in its UK locations. The company is also considering the introduction of a new afternoon tea menu, which would include sparkling beverages, sippable coffee drinks, and bite-sized snacks.
This strategic shift is part of a broader effort to enhance the customer experience and create a more inviting atmosphere in its stores. By focusing on its employees and reducing its reliance on equipment, Starbucks aims to create a more personalized and welcoming environment for its customers. This approach is expected to drive the company's future growth and success.
