ST Telemedia Expands with Launch of STT Tokyo 1 Amid Japan's Data Center Boom

ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) has marked its inaugural entry into Japan with the launch of STT Tokyo 1, an advanced data center facility in Inzai City, part of the Greater Tokyo area. This strategic expansion enhances STT GDC's footprint in Northeast Asia and signifies a pivotal development in its global growth agenda.

STT Tokyo 1 is the first of two planned edifices within STT GDC's data center campus at Goodman Business Park. This facility, featuring a gross floor area of 60,000 square meters, will offer up to 32 megawatts of IT capacity when fully operational. Together, the campus aims to provide support for up to 70 megawatts, effectively addressing escalating demands for high-performance digital infrastructure in the region.

In response to the advancing digital transformation wave in Japan, Kiyoshi Maeda, CEO – Japan at ST Telemedia Global Data Centres, emphasized the facility's role in delivering the necessary performance and reliability to optimize applications and data for clients. STT Tokyo 1 has been developed with a focus on both performance and sustainability and adheres to the Japan Data Centre Council (JDCC) guidelines to meet critical requirements for local clients.

The facility is strategically positioned to meet the increasing demand for secure, resilient, and energy-efficient digital infrastructure from diverse sectors, including global cloud service providers, financial institutions, content platforms, and other enterprises within Japan.

The introduction of STT Tokyo 1 comes amidst a rapidly expanding data center market in Japan, which research firm IDC Japan forecasts to burgeon from 2.74 trillion yen in 2023 to 5.08 trillion yen (US$34.6 billion) by 2028. This growth is driven by heightened reliance on cloud computing, rising demands for AI technologies, increased outsourcing of IT services, and a movement towards data onshoring—areas where STT Tokyo 1 is deftly positioned to address these sophisticated needs.

In terms of digital infrastructure expansion, Japan anticipates the addition of eight new submarine cables to its existing network of 40 operational submarine cables by the period spanning 2025-2027. These submarine cables are essential for facilitating high-speed data transmission, reducing latency, and supporting the burgeoning demand for broadband and cloud services pivotal to Japan’s digital economy.
