Everyone's All-In on Spider-Man Clearing $140M. Polymarket Is Quietly Paying 60x If They're Wrong.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day just posted the second-biggest opening weekend in box office history, crossed $1 billion in its first week, and the Polymarket crowd has reacted by shoving 91.5 cents onto ONE answer: a second weekend of "140-150 million." The bucket directly below that line is still priced at 1.65 cents. That's a $100 ticket that returns $6,061. And the number that resolves it is being counted right now.
The monster is mid-run. Brand New Day opened July 31-Aug. 2 with an estimated $355 million domestic -- the second-biggest opening ever, about $2 million short of Endgame, on the strength of a record $168 million Friday (ABC News). Internationally it tacked on another $572 million, for a $927 million global debut that industry analysts are already calling the biggest weekend for movie theaters in history (Barron's, The Independent). It's the first film ever to hit $500 million domestic inside its first week, and it crossed $1.2 billion worldwide by Friday (Forbes).
Now the second weekend -- August 7-9 -- is being scored in real time, and Polymarket is running a board on the exact number.
The crowd picked a side. The projection didn't. The market splits the 3-day gross into $10 million buckets and resolves on The Numbers' finalized figures (studio estimates don't count; if the value lands exactly on a boundary, it resolves to the higher bucket, with a final-verification deadline of August 14). Roughly $200,000 in liquidity is sitting on this board, and traders have piled into the "140-150M" bucket so hard it trades at 91.5 cents. In market terms: a sub-$140 million weekend is basically impossible.
Except the projection everyone is hyping says otherwise. Forbes reported Friday that Brand New Day is projected to make "$135 million-plus" at the second weekend, calling the range "$135-140 million" (Forbes). The midpoint of that range is $138 million. That is below $140 million. The line the crowd is all-in on starts exactly where the official projection's midpoint ends.
The 60x hiding in plain sight. Here's the board:

The "130-140M" bucket trades at 1.65 cents. A $100 buy-in gets you 6,061 shares. If The Numbers confirms the weekend anywhere from $130 million up to just under $140 million -- including that $135-138 million projection sweet spot -- every share pays a dollar: $6,061 back, a $5,961 profit. Sixty times your money, on a bet priced like a rounding error.
The honest part, so you know the deal: if the weekend clears $140 million, that ticket is dust. Full loss. And that's genuinely possible -- the movie has gravity. India's second Saturday is running at 66.6% occupancy (NDTV), and a megahit clearing a $100 million+ second weekend is no joke. The crowd might simply be right.
But here's what nobody is looking at: traders read the headline "$135-140M" and heard "huge," then grabbed the 91.5-cent bucket that makes them feel safe. The people pricing those buckets stopped reading at the comma. The number that actually resolves this market is written right there on the projection line -- and half that range lands below $140 million.
The weekend is happening right now. Saturday's gross is already in the books. The board resolves within days. Sleep on it and the window closes with it.
The crowd is betting a Spider-Man movie stays huge. I'm betting the projection it's measured against gets taken at face value. One of us is about to look very early -- or very late.
Summary
The crowd has pinned the "140-150M" bucket at 91.5c, but the cited projection calls the second weekend "$135-140M." The "130-140M" bucket at 1.65c pays roughly 60x. This is a lottery ticket, not a lock -- if it clears $140M, the stake is gone. Resolves on The Numbers' final figures within days.
