Retail segment net sales rose 12.8% to $762.9 million, while Wholesale segment net sales declined 3% to $1.51 billion. Adjusted EPS was $0.54, beating estimates, but net earnings fell to $6.2 million from $11.5 million in the prior year. The company attributed profitability to gross margin improvements and recent acquisitions.
SpartanNash Co reported a modest increase in net sales for the second quarter of 2025, with net sales rising 1.8% to $2.27 billion. This performance was slightly below analyst expectations, as the company's retail segment saw a significant increase in net sales, while the wholesale segment experienced a decline. The company's adjusted earnings per share (EPS) for the quarter beat estimates, reflecting operational improvements.
The retail segment's net sales increased by 12.8% to $762.9 million, driven by contributions from recent acquisitions. Comparable-store sales in the retail segment decreased by 0.5% due to lower unit volumes. On the other hand, the wholesale segment's net sales decreased by 3% to $1.51 billion, primarily due to reduced case volumes in the national accounts customer channel and the elimination of intercompany sales to the newly acquired Fresh Encounter Inc. stores. Higher sales in the military customer channel partially offset these declines.
Quarterly net earnings were $6.2 million, or $0.18 per diluted share, compared to net earnings of $11.5 million, or $0.34 per diluted share, in the comparable quarter the previous year. The company attributed the profitability to gross margin improvements and recent acquisitions.
SpartanNash Co's president and CEO, Tony Sarsam, expressed pride in the team's focus and efforts, noting that the company's performance remains ahead of expectations. The company's pending acquisition by C&S Wholesale Grocers, LLC, is expected to close in late 2025.
